Opal, clear or coloured glass?
White acid-etched (opal) globes give an even, glare-free light and suit lower ceilings. Clear glass shows the bulb, so use decorative filament or globe bulbs. Smoked and amber glass add warmth and mood but reduce the light.
Branch, sputnik or tiered?
Branch designs such as Nodi and Perlage spread globes in every direction and suit square rooms. Tiered and candle-style designs such as Brigitta and Danieli suit traditional rooms.
Size and height
Use the room formula (length + width in metres × 10 = diameter in cm). Over a table, hang the lowest glass 75–90 cm above the top.
Cleaning
Glass shades can usually be removed and washed by hand, which makes glass chandeliers easier to look after than crystal.
