Outdoor wall lights

An outdoor wall light is fixed to an exterior wall to light a door, path, patio or facade. Which IP rating?

IP44 is the minimum outdoors and suits walls under a canopy or porch. Choose IP54 or IP65 for exposed walls facing the weather.

Up-and-down or downward light?

Up-and-down lights wash the wall above and below and make a facade feature. Downward lights put light where you walk and reduce light pollution.

Height and spacing

Beside a front door, mount at about 1.7–1.8 m, or just above head height. Along a facade, space up-and-down lights 2–4 m apart for an even rhythm.

Sensors

Motion and twilight sensors switch lights on only when needed. See outdoor sensor lights.

Finishes

Anthracite, black, white, grey and coffee are the usual Ideal Lux outdoor finishes, all powder-coated aluminium; some designs use resin bodies.
