How far apart should bollards be?
Along a path, space short bollards about 2–4 m apart and taller ones 4–6 m apart, so the pools of light just meet. On wide paths and driveways, stagger them on alternate sides. Our bollard spacing guide has a full table.
Which height?
Short bollards (under 50 cm) suit borders, steps and narrow paths and keep glare low. Medium bollards (50–80 cm) suit most garden paths and patios. Tall bollards and posts (80 cm and over) suit driveways, car parks and larger landscapes. The height is in most Ideal Lux names, for example Tronco h60 is 60 cm.
Which IP rating?
IP44 is the minimum for outdoor lighting. IP54 or IP65 is better for exposed sites, and anywhere that is hosed or pressure-washed. Every product page shows the IP rating from the Ideal Lux technical sheet.
Materials and finish
Most Ideal Lux bollards are powder-coated die-cast aluminium in anthracite, white, coffee, grey or black; some, such as Atena, Cosmo, Dafne and Titano, use weather-resistant resin. For sites near the sea, ask us before specifying: we only recommend products the manufacturer rates for coastal use.
LED or bulb?
Integrated LED bollards need no lamp changes and use very little energy, which matters for lights that run every evening. Bulb versions (often E27) let you choose the brightness and colour later.
Glare and light spill
Choose bollards that direct light downwards (several Ideal Lux designs, such as Kurt, Tesla and Tifone, have downward emission), especially near windows and neighbours.
Installation
Bollards are fixed to a concrete base or a ground spike, with armoured or ducted cable. All outdoor circuits must be RCD-protected and installed by a qualified electrician. Add a photocell or timer so they switch on at dusk.
