Bathroom Lighting IP Ratings Explained (UK Zones)

By , 299 Lighting · Published · Updated

In short

In UK bathrooms, Zone 1 above the bath or shower needs at least IP65, Zone 2 within 60 cm needs IP44, and outside the zones standard IP20 fittings are allowed.

Bathrooms are the room where getting the light fitting wrong is a safety issue, not just a style issue. UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) split a bathroom into zones, and each zone needs a minimum IP rating.

What does an IP rating mean?

The first digit is protection against solids such as dust and fingers. The second is protection against water. IP44 resists splashes; IP65 resists jets of water.

Choosing Ideal Lux fittings

Many Ideal Lux wall lights and mirror lights are IP44, which makes them suitable for Zone 2 around basins and mirrors. Always check the IP rating shown on each fitting page, and the technical sheet, before ordering. Browse Ideal Lux wall lights and filter by "Damp / outdoor (IP44+)" on all fittings.

Downlights in the shower

Over a shower you will normally need IP65 fire-rated downlights. Our sister site recessedlighting.co.uk covers these in detail. For a seamless plaster-in look, see trimless lighting.
