Outdoor Wall Lights: Choosing IP Rating, Finish and Light Output

By , 299 Lighting · Published · Updated

In short

For outdoor wall lights in the UK choose IP44 or higher, a finish that suits coastal or city air, warm 2700–3000K light, and roughly 400–800 lumens per entrance light.

Outdoor wall lights face rain, frost and UV for years. Choosing the right rating and finish means they still look good after several winters.

IP rating

IP44 is the minimum for a covered porch. Use IP54–IP65 for exposed walls that take driving rain. Ideal Lux outdoor ranges list their rating on every fitting page.

Finish

  • Anthracite and black powder-coated aluminium hides dirt and suits modern homes.
  • White looks crisp on render but shows marks.
  • Near the coast, choose powder-coated or stainless finishes and wipe them down a few times a year.

Light output and colour

Use 400–800 lumens beside a front door and 200–400 lumens for wall washers along a path. Warm 2700–3000K light flatters brick and stone and is kinder to wildlife.

Up/down and wall washing

Up/down lights graze the wall and make façades look taller. Spaced every 2–3 m, they turn a plain wall into a feature. Browse Ideal Lux outdoor lighting for wall, bollard and spike lights.
